Windows Vista => OS X?

There's been a lot of speculation recently about the future of Mac OS given the move to Intel processors and the release of BootCamp. Some are speculating that perhaps this is the beginning of the end for Mac OS; that Apple will begin shipping Macs that run Windows Vista, perhaps (a recent Apple ad campaign suggests otherwise). There's also been a lot of discussion about the delayed release of Windows Vista, the continuing security issues on the Windows platform, and Micrsoft's new focus on delivering applications and services via the Web.

This got me thinking. Admittedly, this is a crazy idea and will never happen, but bear with me. Thanks to it's UNIX underpinnings, Apple now makes what most experts agree is a pretty rock solid and secure OS. Windows, on the other hand, is neither rick solid nor secure. Mac OS is now able to run the apps most people really care about, namely MS Office and a Web browser. Mac OS is clearly superior when it comes to the "lifestyle" apps like photo, video and music programs which are becoming more important to the average user all the time. And Mac OS has a clear advantage in the move toward the PC as entertainment center. Okay, ready for crazy? Microsoft and Apple work together to make Mac OS the next Vista (Rosetta for Windows apps). Microsoft gets a secure, stable, next generation OS and Apple gets a cut of all those Windows licenses. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to dominate the Office world and takes aim at software as a service. Apple continues to make sexy hardware that now runs everthing under one unified OS.

Like I said, crazy.
